Dog Training For Agility

In addition to dogs being used for pets, show, and breeding, many people will train their dogs for the sport of agility.

This sport has grown tremendously over the years, something that is fun for the dog and amazing to watch for the owner. For agility sport, a dog is trained to demonstrate incredible agile skills and versatility by completing a number of easy to hard obstacles.

The sport of agility works by the handler being given a specific period of time in which the dog is directed off leash. During this time, the dog would run a course consisting of various tunnels, ladders, poles, and more. When the sport of agility for dogs first got started, it was modeled off equestrian stadium jumping but over the years, new obstacles have been added and the scoring system modified.

With agility, the dog must go through proper training. The result is learning an amazing physical skill, along with patience, handler/dog teamwork, and lots of control. After all, dogs involved with agility sports are not only racing against time but they must also complete every feat with accuracy and grace. Remember, you are training your dog to complete actions that sometimes go against his natural instinct. For instance, part of the agility sport may include the dog climbing tall heights, something he would normally not do.

Probably one of the most astounding of all agility sport activities is the weave poles. In this case, the dog enters to the right side of the first pole, weaving his body tightly and quickly in and out of all poles so he exits to the left of the last one. His action is so fast that it is mesmerizing. Of course, all obstacles for dog agility sports have safety first, followed by appeal to the people watching. The outcome is a wonderful event that showcases the dog’s ability.

Training a dog for agility sports starts with him learning basic commands. From there, a handler will often have the dog professionally trained to get him to do more than imaginable. Sometimes, owners will train their own dogs but it is imperative that proper training be provided since you are requesting a lot of physical activity from your pet. While agility sports have been common throughout Europe for some time, they are relatively new in the United States. Today, a number of national organizations exist that include sanction tests, training, and events.
