Puppy Toilet Training - What you need to knowWhen it comes time to potty train your new puppy, it is essential to know the right method. Keep in mind that just as with children, teaching a puppy to go outside for business is accomplished using a number of methods. While one training method for potty training works well for one dog, another dog would need a totally, different method for success. Therefore, you need to understand your puppy so you know the method to use. Typically, your new puppy will learn best with gentleness and firmness combined. However, positive reinforcement will go a long way, much further than yelling or becoming mad. With this attitude in training your puppy, he will learn quickly and easily to go outside rather than inside. The key with any toilet training method of a puppy is to be consistent, clear with instructions, and use a "no harm" process so your puppy always feels loved and safe with you. Remember, you need to teach your new puppy to understand the words you say since they obviously do not understand the human language. This means using facial expressions and body language to show your dog you are serious but yet in a loving way. By using the right tone of voice, your puppy will soon learn that light lilt means time spent outside where he can do his business. In addition, use the same word for potty. For instance, if you say, "Go potty", your dog will soon understand those two little words are intended for outside time.
You should also remember that young puppies have little control over when they have to go. Therefore, set up a schedule so once your dog eats and drinks, within 30 minutes, he is taken outdoors even if he has given you no signs of needing to go potty. In other words, you can work with your dog’s body, teaching him to understand the physical urges the right way. Of course, your puppy is going to have accidents. When this occurs, be patient, not punishing the dog but again, taking him outside so he can begin to associate potty with outside.
