Should I Buy a guide for training a dog?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. Dog training books do work if they are the right books.

Unfortunately, you will find a number of training books on the market that can do more harm than they can do good. However, choosing the right book, one that provides information on proven methods for success can be found. To help you get started, we have provided a list of books we recommend.

  • The Dog Whisperer – Written by Paul Owens, this book teaches a loving, non-aggressive way to train your dog. With effective communication, you can teach your dog any command without yelling, jerking, or hitting. Keep in mind, this book is not the same "dog whisperer, Cesar Millan".

  • Don’t Shoot the Dog – Tips from the author, Karen Pryor, will guide you to training your dog with positive reinforcement. Using a clicker technology, you will have excellent results.

  • Ruff Love – Susan Garrett shows you how to build a loving and secure relationship with your dog while staying in control but without negative training methods. Instead, you will learn to get your dog’s attention so he quickly learns commands.

  • Scaredy Dog – Understanding and Rehabilitating your Reactive Dog – For people who have reactive dogs, Ali Brown has put together an excellent book that works. For instance, if you own a dog that lungs or jumps at people, one that barks incisively, or one that bites, this book is for you!

  • Fight – Written by Jean Donaldson, this dog-training book is an outstanding choice for training dogs with aggression issues. With this book, you can stop worrying about your aggressive dog and enjoy a loving, healthy relationship.

  • Dogs are from Neptune – Another Jean Donaldson book, this one is loaded with tons of information so you can deal with serious dog problems.
